Introduction of New Index:
BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bombay Stock Exchange, has launched a new benchmark called the BSE All Derivative Stocks Index to track stocks from the BSE 500 universe that are eligible for futures and options trading.
Purpose of the Index:
The index is intended to provide a transparent, rules‑based benchmark that reflects the performance of derivative‑linked equities, offering investors and market participants insight into this specific segment of the Indian equity market.
Weighting Methodology:
Constituents in the index are weighted using a combination of float‑adjusted market capitalisation and momentum scores, with an individual stock weight capped at 10 percent to maintain balanced representation.
Historical Base and Rebalancing:
The index is built with a base value of 1,000, using June 23, 2014 as the first value date, and is scheduled to be reconstituted semi‑annually in June and December to ensure it continues reflecting current market conditions.
Market Representation:
By capturing the performance of derivative‑eligible stocks within the broader BSE 500, the new index aims to mirror the growing depth and liquidity of India’s equity derivatives market.
Strategic Significance:
According to Ashutosh Singh, Managing Director and CEO of BSE Index Services, this index marks a structural development in how benchmarks are constructed in India, allowing market participants to observe trends in the derivatives‑linked equity universe more closely.
Use Cases for Investors:
The index can serve as a basis for a variety of passive investment products, including exchange‑traded funds (ETFs) and index funds. It can also be used as a benchmark for portfolio management services (PMS), mutual funds, and other investment strategies.
Role of BSE Index Services:
BSE Index Services, formerly known as Asia Index Pvt. Ltd., is responsible for calculating, publishing and maintaining this and other equity indices, maintaining continuity in index production and standardisation.
