Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is planning to introduce hydrogen-powered buses, becoming the first airport in India to operate such vehicles for passenger transport.
The project will involve the deployment of three hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses within the airport premises to move passengers between terminals and other facilities.
CIAL has signed an agreement with the Kerala Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster Foundation (K-HVIC) to implement the initiative as part of India’s **National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The buses will receive financial support of up to ₹2.9 crore per vehicle, with the total project cost estimated at ₹8.7 crore.
Once the buses are procured, CIAL will own and operate them, covering maintenance, operational costs, and deciding the routes inside the airport.
The hydrogen buses are expected to improve passenger transport while significantly reducing carbon emissions from airport ground operations.
Hydrogen fuel for the buses will come from a green hydrogen production facility developed at the airport in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
The project is part of Kerala’s broader effort to develop hydrogen-based mobility and clean energy infrastructure in the state.
