Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) receiving a net zero energy rating:
Net Zero Energy Rating Achieved:
Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has received the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Net Zero Energy (operations pre-certified) rating for its three passenger terminals (T1, T2, T3) and cargo buildings.
Recognition Event:
The certification was presented at the 23rd Green Building Congress organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) together with IGBC in Mumbai.
What “Net Zero Energy” Means:
A net zero energy building is one that produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year, primarily through renewable sources and energy efficiency measures.
Operational Pre-Certification:
The “operations pre-certified” status indicates CIAL’s terminals and cargo facilities already meet stringent energy performance and sustainability standards and are on track for full net zero performance.
Focus Areas in Evaluation:
The rating assessed energy usage, passenger comfort, advanced air-conditioning systems, smart lighting, and high-efficiency equipment, all contributing to reduced power consumption and environmental impact.
Sustainable Energy Generation:
CIAL has been a major contributor to renewable energy in Kerala. By September 2025, its on-site solar plant generated around 25 crore units of electricity, significantly lowering carbon emissions.
Carbon Emission Reduction:
This renewable energy generation has helped avoid approximately 160,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions.
Additional Renewable Projects:
CIAL also produces energy through a solar plant at Payyannur (about 1 crore units to date) and from a 4.5 MW hydroelectric project in Arippara, Kozhikode.
Leadership Representation:
The award was accepted by CIAL’s Managing Director S. Suhas and Airport Director Manu G.
