India has achieved a landmark milestone in its clean energy journey by recording its highest-ever annual renewable energy capacity addition in 2025. The country added an impressive 44.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power capacity during the year, reflecting a sharp acceleration in deployment across solar, wind, and distributed energy segments.
This record expansion has taken India’s total installed renewable energy capacity to approximately 254 GW, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
Solar energy emerged as the primary driver of capacity expansion in 2025. Nearly 35 GW of new solar capacity was added during the year, driven by large-scale solar parks, rooftop installations, and commercial and industrial projects.
As a result, India’s total installed solar capacity rose to around 133 GW, marking a significant year-on-year increase and highlighting solar’s central role in the nation’s energy transition strategy.
Wind power installations also gained momentum, with close to 6 GW of new capacity added in 2025. This pushed India’s total wind energy capacity beyond 50 GW, supported by improved project execution and grid integration.
Rooftop solar installations crossed important milestones as well, with widespread adoption by households, small businesses, and institutions under national incentive programs aimed at decentralizing clean energy generation.
The sharp rise in renewable capacity strengthens India’s energy security, reduces reliance on fossil fuel imports, and contributes to long-term emission reduction goals. The increased share of renewables in the power mix is also expected to stabilize electricity costs over time and support industrial growth.
The record-breaking performance in 2025 sets a strong foundation for continued expansion in the coming years. With policy support, improving economics of clean technologies, and rising investor interest, India is well positioned to sustain high levels of renewable energy capacity additions as it moves toward its long-term climate and sustainability targets.
