Future Growth Plans: The Managing Director of Kannur International Airport (KIAL) says the airport is preparing to expand both international and domestic flight services, with additional airlines expected to begin operations soon.
Rising Passenger Traffic: Kannur Airport has recorded its highest annual passenger numbers, despite challenges like COVID-19, the Ahmedabad crash, and disruptions in the Middle East. Over 15.2 lakh passengers used the airport last year.
Domestic Connectivity Boost: The airport currently offers flights to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Chandigarh and Thiruvananthapuram. Discussions are underway with airlines like SpiceJet, Fly 91 and Star Air to start additional services.
Upcoming Domestic Routes: Fly 91 is expected to operate Goa–Agatti flights, and new domestic connections like Pune–Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar–Kolkata are planned from Kannur.
International Passenger Growth: Of the airport’s total passengers, over 10.5 lakh travelled internationally, marking a 15 % increase compared with the previous year.
Point-of-Call Status Needed: KIAL is still awaiting official point-of-call status, which would allow foreign airlines to operate full international services into and out of Kannur; this designation is decided by the central government.
Foreign Airline Interest: Eight foreign carriers have shown interest in starting services at Kannur, and talks are underway for direct flights to destinations like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Current International Links: Connection services, including flights to London Heathrow with through-ticketing and baggage transfer, are already popular.
Tourism and Pilgrimage: The airport is strategically important for tourism and pilgrimage, being close to destinations like Coorg and Wayanad, and it supports groups such as Hajj travellers and visitors to local temples.
MRO and Infrastructure Plans: A maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility — the first in Kerala — is set to launch soon. The airport also has the largest land area of any airport in Kerala, facilitating future growth projects.
Sustainability Initiatives: KIAL is installing solar power systems to reduce electricity costs, which currently run to around ₹3 lakh per day, with expected savings of up to 40 % once fully operational.
