The Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSEI) reported a strong rise in total income during the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27), although higher operating expenses resulted in a wider net loss. The exchange continues to invest in technology, liquidity enhancement, and market development as it works towards expanding its market presence and improving trading activity.
MSEI's total income increased to ₹20.30 crore in Q1 FY27 from ₹6.45 crore in the corresponding quarter last year, registering an impressive 214.73% year-on-year growth.
The increase was almost entirely driven by a sharp jump in Other Income, which rose to ₹19.65 crore compared to ₹5.50 crore in Q1 FY26. Meanwhile, Revenue from Operations declined to ₹0.65 crore from ₹0.95 crore a year ago.
This indicates that treasury income and other non-core income sources were the primary contributors to the exchange's overall earnings during the quarter, rather than its core exchange operations.
Revenue from Operations fell 31.58% year-on-year to ₹0.65 crore, highlighting that MSEI's transaction-based business continues to remain at a relatively early stage.
The exchange is still working to expand its trading ecosystem by attracting more members, increasing trading volumes, and improving overall market participation. Strengthening core operating revenue will be important in reducing dependence on non-operating income and creating a more sustainable earnings profile over the long term.
MSEI significantly increased investments across multiple areas of its business during the quarter.
Total expenses rose to ₹45.01 crore, compared to ₹13.88 crore in Q1 FY26, representing a 224.42% increase.
The increase was driven by higher spending across several categories:
These investments reflect MSEI's continued focus on improving technology infrastructure, strengthening market liquidity, enhancing operational capabilities, and building a more competitive exchange platform.
Despite the sharp increase in total income, MSEI reported a Net Loss of ₹24.71 crore during Q1 FY27, compared to ₹7.43 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
The higher loss was primarily due to the substantial increase in operating expenses, which outweighed the growth in income.
The exchange also reported a Total Comprehensive Loss of ₹24.68 crore for the quarter after accounting for other comprehensive income.
Apart from its financial performance, MSEI continued strengthening its capital base and governance framework during the quarter.
The financial statements highlighted the continued implementation of private placement issuances that had been approved during FY25 and FY26, helping strengthen the exchange's capital structure.
The company also recognised additional employee benefit expenses following the implementation of India's new Labour Codes. At the same time, MSEI continued investing in exchange infrastructure and market development initiatives aimed at supporting future growth.
Several factors shaped the exchange's quarterly performance.
A sharp rise in other income significantly boosted total income during the quarter, although the improvement came largely from non-operating sources rather than the core business.
Technology spending continued to increase as MSEI invested in strengthening its trading platform and operational capabilities.
The exchange also incurred significant liquidity enhancement expenses to improve market participation and encourage higher trading activity on its platform.
Meanwhile, higher employee costs, depreciation, and administrative expenses reflected the company's continued investment in long-term business development.
