Project Awarded to Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED):
SED has won a turnkey engineering contract to design and build India’s first boiler-free greenfield standalone sugar refinery at Kandla in Gujarat.
Location and Scale:
The refinery will be established near key export corridors in Kandla and is planned to process 1,000–1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of raw sugar.
Completion Timeline:
Construction and commissioning are scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2027.
Sustainability Features:
The plant will operate without traditional boilers, eliminating the need to burn fossil fuels.
It will use only renewable energy sources (solar and wind) for power.
The design aims for zero water consumption through a closed-loop moisture recovery system.
Internal lime recalcination will recover and reuse lime, reducing waste solids.
Environmental Impact:
The refinery is expected to achieve zero CO₂ emissions, aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals and supporting India’s net-zero ambitions.
Energy & Product Efficiency:
It will consume about 70 kWh of energy per tonne of sugar processed.
Designed for 99 % sugar recovery with the ability to refine export-grade sugar (low ICUMSA ratings).
Collaborative Partnership:
SED is collaborating with Fullon Sugar Private Limited for the project, combining engineering expertise with operational support.
Extended Responsibilities:
SED will also manage a long-term Operations & Maintenance (O&M) contract, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency beyond the initial build.
Global Benchmark:
The pioneering design is expected to set a new global standard for sustainable sugar refining technologies.
